In the 17th century, the Porte Saint Martin was one of the main entrances to the city.
Then, as the Gare du Nord and Gare de l’Est stations were built for travel to Northern and Eastern Europe, the district grew, and commercial and cultural activity flourished.
So, nearby, you’ll find the famous Grands Boulevards with their many theatres and the Sentier district. Châtelet and Nôtre Dame are also very close by.
